Wouter Biesbrouck:
Het concept ‘realistisch verhaal’ bij Hans Frei: Betekenis en verwijzing bij evangelieverhalen
Hans Frei wilde de correlatietheologie van de liberale theologie, die hij verstond als een misplaatste apologetiek, vermijden. Hij maakte daarvoor gebruik van de categorie van ‘realistisch verhaal’, een formele categorie die hem toeliet een narratieve benadering van de theologie te ontwikkelen. Dit artikel evalueert dit concept kritisch. Volgens Frei moet er prioriteit gegeven worden aan het verhaal ook al sluit dit niet uit dat er historische verwijzingen in het verhaal kunnen zitten. Als gevalstudie bestuderen we hoe Frei het verrijzenisverhaal behandelt, en tonen daarbij aan dat Frei’s concepten van ‘realistisch’ en ‘geschiedenis-achtig’ verhaal ook moeten rekening houden met de waarheidsclaim die het verhaal maakt.

UNITY AND DIVERSITY IN EARLY JUDAISM: THE ‘JUDAISMS’ OF THE SECOND TEMPLE PERIOD
Elaborating upon the ‘Groningen Hypothesis’ on the origins of the Qumran community, Gabriele Boccaccini has developed a typology of different ‘Judaisms’ in Early Judaism. After presenting this hypothesis of a distinct ‘Enochic’ Judaism and its relationship to ‘Zadokite’ and ‘Sapiental’ Judaism, this contribution seeks to briefly evaluate the merits and limitations of this approach. More specifically, it points out that texts should be distinguished from socio-religious realities, and maintains that Early Judaism should be understood in terms of an orthopraxy rather than as a normative ideology

Wouter Biesbrouck:
HANS FREI’S CONCEPT OF ‘REALISTIC NARRATIVE’: SENSE AND REFERENT OF GOSPEL NARRATIVES
Hans Frei tried to eschew what he perceived as liberal theology’s mistaken apologetic of correlation. In this contribution, Frei’s category of ‘realistic narrative’, which allowed him to develop a narrative approach to theology, is critically evaluated. For Frei, priority must be given to the narrative. However, this does not imply the negation of historical references in the story. As a test case, we critically interact with Frei’s handling of the resurrection story. We show that the concept of ‘realistic’ or ‘history-like’ narrative must also deal with the truth claim of the narrative.

THE CONNECTION OF RELIGION AND PLAY
In scholarly literature, religion and play are connected in various ways: they are equalised to each other and subjected to each other in opposite and contrary senses. This article aims to bring more clarity about which connections and comparisons of religion and play are possible and plausible and which are not. The point of departure is that religion and play are forms of expression of a human being’s relation to reality. This relation is viewed as transcendental in two senses: a relation in and through which reality transcends the human being and the human being transcends reality. Religion and play express this, religion as the first form of transcendence, play as the second. It is concluded that religion and play can be connected as different expressions of different forms of transcendence.

Tjitze Baarda:
ROMANS 9:16, ‘… τρ?χοντος…’: A SHORT NOTE ON PAUL’S USE OF THIS VERB
The usual interpretation of the verb τρ?χοντος assumes that the idea of ‘running’ is derived from the Hellenistic metaphor of foot-races in the stadium, as found elsewhere in the Pauline Letters. It is, of course, quite possible that the original addressees would have understood it this way, but one might ask whether Paul himself was thinking here of runners on the racetrack. One of the issues in the Letter to the Romans is the meaning of the Law in Christian life. It struck me that the poet of the Ode to the Law wrote, ‘I will run in the way of your commandments’ (Ps. 119:32). My intention in this short note is to offer the reader the opportunity to consider whether Paul could have in mind the expression ‘to run’ from this Psalm.

JOHN MILBANK, THEOLOGY & SOCIAL THEORY
In 1990, John Milbank published his fundamental manifesto Theology & Social Theory, addressed to theologians and social theorists alike. In it, he sought to both interpret and relativise social theory from the perspective of Christian theology and to reposition Christian theology in relation to other disciplines. Arguing that social theory is, at its core, theology, and that theology already provides a social theory, he laid out his case for a (theological) social theory to which an ontology of peace is central. This contribution considers the core of Milbank’s argument and lays out how it has challenged and continues to challenge theologians from various disciplines.
